The Bar

In the last few years, it’s become a pretty fun (and at times expensive) hobby to collect and start a home bar. And really, it’s taken years to get what I have now. Often times I get home bar envy and I dream of winning the lottery or a great scratch off so that I can have a shopping spree at the liquor warehouse. Dreams can come true…

When stocking your home bar (unless you’re like me), start off with the spirit you drink the most. From there you can try different makes for the same cocktail and really decide which ones you like the best and that can be your go-to. Then you can expand. Maybe if you read a liquor blog and get tasting profiles, or see something on tv or even Instagram and decide you want to try it, then you can go and get whatever it is you want to try and build from there. Even mini bottles will be cost effective when trying something new. Personally, I would like for my home bar to be a visual and functional work of art. I try to get as much as I can when I can and I keep my check list in my phone. I especially like to look for local products when  I’m out of town or something that I haven’t seen where I live that’s on my list. The only thing that can really slow your building process or possibly make it hard for you is cost. Alcohol gets pretty pricey so get something that you think is worth buying.

The Bitters craze has taken over the cocktail world. Originally created for medicinal use, there are hundreds of different flavors and Bitters too, can be costly. It’s almost overwhelming. Sometimes I feel like I need to throw a dash of Bitters in everything! But, like I said on the “Welcome Page”, there’s a certain confidence in simplicity and sometimes the best things are not complex or over crowded. For me, in North Carolina, Bitters can be hard to come by unless you order them online or make them yourself. I’ve done both. Now, it’s a little better. We’re catching on to the fast paced cocktail scene. If it’s hard for you to find Bitters (which it shouldn’t be now. They’re everywhere!), syrups, fresh fruit juice and zest are always a good boost of flavor. The flavor combinations for syrups are endless!

Here’s the run down on my Bar.
